Maya MacGuineas: Congress, stop ignoring Social Security

Maya MacGuineas is president of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget. She recently wrote an opinion piece for Dallas Morning News, an excerpt of which is below.

The trustees overseeing the Social Security program recently announced that the source of retirement benefits for more than 62 million Americans and roughly 40% of American seniors will be insolvent in just eight years — and that millions of retirees will face immediate and across-the-board cuts once that happens.

And yet, astonishingly, that isn’t the most alarming part of the situation.

No, the most alarming part is that our political leaders have known for decades that the program faces insolvency and have failed to act. Even now, after this most recent report, they are not getting to work making changes to shore up the program as quickly as possible.

This places seniors at risk, shifts huge responsibilities onto younger workers, and is going to cause massive intergenerational strife when all of this becomes impossible to ignore.
