2/25 Event – Social Security: Just the Facts

Social Security is the bedrock of the U.S. retirement system, providing benefits for 70 million Americans. And yet, few understand how the program works, why it is facing insolvency in less than seven years, and what happens if policymakers fail to act.

On Wednesday, February 25, 2026, the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget hosted a virtual webinar, "Social Security: Just the Facts." The webinar featured the Committee's Director of Social Security Policy, Mark Sarney, who helped to answer these questions, debunk common myths and misconceptions about the program, and unveil our brand-new educational resource that explains the basics of the program. Mark also took questions from our audience as well.
