The Dangers of the Current Policy Baseline Gimmick
With the House and the Senate passing vastly different budget resolutions, lawmakers are now working to figure out how to reconcile the differences. One of the biggest issues emerging from these negotiations is whether to use a current law or a current policy baseline. The issue is a technical one, but the consequences of the decision are huge.
On March 13, 2025, the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget hosted "The Dangers of the Current Policy Baseline Gimmick," a virtual event featuring an expert panel discussion on what this gimmick is and the dangers it would present to the current and future policymaking process. The panel concluded with an audience Q&A as well.
Panelists included:
Marc Goldwein, Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget
Romina Boccia, Cato Institute
George Callas, Arnold Ventures
Bobby Kogan, Center for American Progress
