John Kasich: Balancing the Budget Became My Mission
John Kasich is the former Governor of Ohio and a member of the Board of Directors of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget. He recently wrote an opinion piece for his Substack, Keep Faith America with John Kasich, an excerpt of which is below.
Since my last column about our $40 trillion national debt ran, many people have asked me the same question.
How did you do it?
They mean the 1997 agreement between a Republican Congress and a Democratic president that helped produce four straight years of federal budget surpluses.
The first thing I tell them is that I did not do it. No one person did. A leader can provide direction, vision, and purpose, but it takes a team to turn them into action. If you do not have good people who believe in the mission, you cannot do it alone.
But my part began long before I became chairman of the House Budget Committee.
