Director of Special Projects

The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget (Committee) is a nonpartisan nonprofit organization devoted to educating policymakers, the media and citizens about the fiscal challenges facing the country, as well as the possible solutions. The Committee is made up of some of the nation's leading budget experts including many of the past Chairmen and Directors of the Budget Committees, the Congressional Budget Office, the Office of Management and Budget, and the Government Accountability Office.

The Committee is seeking a dynamic and highly motivated Director of Special Projects to join our team. Reporting to the Senior Vice President and Chief of Staff, this role will be responsible for planning, implementing, tracking, and executing a range of strategic, operational, and administrative projects. The Director will work across the organization to ensure projects are completed to the highest standard and in alignment with their timelines and objectives.

The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of the Committee’s core fiscal policy issues and proven experience managing and delivering complex projects involving multiple stakeholders. They should also be a strong strategic thinker with excellent problem-solving skills, a results-oriented mindset, and a commitment to continuous improvement. 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Serve as project manager for various policy projects assigned by management, overseeing management of day-to-day project activities, including implementing project plans, maintaining timelines and overseeing deliverables
  • Work vertically and horizontally across the organization to help ensure coordination and alignment on goals and objectives, while identifying opportunities, challenges and barriers to success
  • Exercise judgement to prioritize opportunities, prepare background materials and presentations and other project supporting material
  • Manage internal tracking systems to ensure projects are executed according to the guidelines set
  • Perform research to support projects and initiatives as assigned by management  
  • Support other organizational projects of the Committee as needed and assigned 

Qualifications

Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:

  • A passion for and understanding of federal budget issues, particularly the threat posed by our nation’s long term fiscal challenges
  • Exceptional organizational, project and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously, with demonstrated success
  • Proven experience managing projects with cross-functional teams
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, adapting to changing priorities and deadlines.
  • Strong writing and editing skills, with excellent attention to detail
  • Previous research and project management experience preferred
  • 7 to 10 years of professional experience, Hill or Executive branch experience preferred  
  • Bachelor’s degree required

Salary: $120,000 to $160,000 with generous benefits package including health, dental, life and long-term disability insurance; 403(b) contribution; and paid time off.
