Statement on the Passing of Paul O'Neill

For Immediate Release

Former Treasury Secretary and Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget board member Paul O’Neill died Saturday at the age of 84. The following is a statement from Maya MacGuineas, president of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget:

Paul O’Neill’s knowledge of budgetary policy and the economy was unparalleled. As Treasury Secretary in the early 2000s, he was willing to caution against unpaid for tax cuts and stick by his principles, which were established over decades of research and leadership in both the public and private sector.

The Committee was lucky to have his expertise and friendship. Paul was not only a dedicated professional, but also used his spare time and resources to better the world in other areas, particularly health care. He’ll be missed and we extend our deepest condolences to his family.
