The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget is looking for enthusiastic interns to join our team. We are a nonpartisan; non-profit organization committed to educating the public on issues with significant fiscal policy impact. Our bipartisan leadership comprises some of the nation's leading budget experts, which has included many past heads of the House and Senate Budget Committees, the Congressional Budget Office, the Office of Management and Budget, and the Government Accountability Office.
We welcome applications from highly motivated undergraduate or graduate students year-round, though interns typically work for one semester (Fall, Spring, or Summer). Interns may work full-time or part-time while attending classes. Interns work as full members of their respective teams, attending meetings and working alongside full-time staff members. All interns will be paid the DC minimum wage.
This internship is located at our offices in Washington, DC. We are currently working in a hybrid environment; interns will be expected to work in person on days when the staff are working in the office with some flexibility needed depending on the team's needs and in coordination with your supervisor. The Policy team researches and publishes original analyses on fiscal issues. Responsibilities will include contributing to publications on the website and a weekly economic newsletter, conducting research related to team-specific needs on topics like taxes, health care and Social Security; attending events in the DC policy community; and assisting other team members on policy-centric projects and administrative tasks An interest in fiscal policy is vital to success in this position. If there is a specific area of policy you are interested in, please specify that in your cover letter. Policy team interns will often collaborate with the Legislative team.
The Legislative team conducts outreach to policymakers and their staff, working with them to advance fiscally responsible policies. Responsibilities will include watching committee hearings; tracking House and Senate floor activity; researching policymakers’ positions; drafting blogs, memos, outreach to Capitol Hill, and summaries of legislation; and various administrative tasks, including (but not limited to) printing and transporting documents to Capitol Hill, scheduling meetings, attending meetings and taking notes, database entry, and assisting the team with organizing events for congressional staff. Interns will also have recurring projects and will need to assist with ongoing team needs. Previous experience on Capitol Hill is preferred but not required. Legislative interns will often collaborate with the Policy team.
The Communications team seeks to advance the Committee’s work and message with members of the media and the public. Responsibilities will include drafting content and visuals for social media, assisting with the collection and sending of media clips, monitoring press coverage of the Committee, collection and upkeep of media contact lists, designing graphics, and undertaking various research and writing projects.
The Development and Events team works to advance the Committee's public visibility and message through fundraising, public events, and collaborating with influential political, policy, and business voices. Responsibilities will include tracking influential voices speaking on issues related to national debt, background research on potential donors, helping to prepare for the Committee's signature events, as well as helping organize speaking events featuring Committee staff. The team seeks one full time intern for Summer 2026.
Qualifications
- Enrollment in or recent completion of an undergraduate or graduate program
- Interest in fiscal, federal budget, and economic policy issues
- Proven research and analytical skills
- Strong writing and editing skills
- Familiarity with internet research tools
- Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment
- Be a flexible and enthusiastic team player
- Must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19
