What We'd Like to See in the President's Budget

While all eyes (for now) are on the President's State of the Union address tomorrow night, the true test of President Obama's fiscal priorities will come in the FY 2012 President's Budget. Hopefully, we'll get a peek in his speech tomorrow night about what will be included in the FY 2012 budget. Today, CRFB released a statement of what we would like to see in that budget in order to put our country back on a sustainable fiscal path.

We call for the President to not only reach his self-imposed goal of a 3 percent of GDP deficit target by 2015, but also to enact a comprehensive fiscal plan. Specifically, the five things we would like to see are:

  1. Meet the White House's fiscal goal
  2. Use the Fiscal Commission's recommendations as a starting point
  3. Call for the enactment of a fiscal plan this year
  4. Call for a broad deficit reduction plan
  5. Recognize that enacting a fiscal plan can also help the recovery

What direction the President's Budget goes in could be important in determining the path of fiscal policy for the next two years.
