Statement on the Passing of Representative Walter Jones

For Immediate Release

Representative Walter Jones from North Carolina died yesterday, February 10, 2019. The following is a statement from Maya MacGuineas, president of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget:

Walter Jones was one of those rare members of Congress not beholden to anyone, even his own party, but rather his convictions. He wasn’t afraid to go against sometimes harsh political winds when he knew it was the right thing to do. We were proud to name him a fiscal hero last year. He stood up against unpaid-for tax cuts and unpaid-for spending increases when most did not, making him a legend to us here at the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget. Even more importantly, he was a hero to everyone back home for his honesty and integrity. Congress won’t be the same without him.
