CRFB Co-Chair Mitch Daniels Inducted into Order of the Rising Sun

May 19, 2017

Yesterday, the Government of Japan presented CRFB Co-Chair Mitch Daniels with the Order of the Rising Sun, one of the country’s highest honors. The award was given to Daniels “in recognition of his significant contributions to the strengthening of economic relations and mutual understanding between Japan and the United States.”

Mitchell E. Daniels, Jr. is currently the 12th President of Purdue University and served as Governor of Indiana from 2005 to 2013. During his tenure, Indiana went from bankruptcy to a AAA credit rating, led the nation in infrastructure building, and passed sweeping education reforms, including the nation’s first statewide school choice voucher program. Previously, Daniels served as President of Eli Lilly’s North American Pharmaceutical Operations, as a senior advisor to President Ronald Reagan and as Director of the Office of Management and Budget under President George W. Bush.

Previous recipients of the Order of the Rising Sun include former CRFB Chairman Bill Frenzel, who received the honor in 2001 “for his contribution to the betterment of Japan-U.S. trade relations and the enhancement of American understanding of Japan.”

All of us at CRFB congratulate Governor Daniels on this prestigious honor.
